Posted on May 22 2017

Have you heard about coconut oil? It’s all the rage right now, and we’re jumping right on board! Not only is it delicious in the kitchen (tried cooking with coconut oil? It’s pretty awesome), but the health benefits, especially to your skin, are undeniable.

So what is coconut oil? Coconut oil is made from the coconut plant, obviously, but the oil comes from the meat, or white portion of the coconut. The oil is made from the same portion of the coconut as coconut milk, and is then made into oil through either the expeller cold pressed process or through a heating process. Because the heating process can remove many of the nutrients that play such a key role in the effectiveness of coconut oil, you’ll want to look for the expeller cold pressed coconut oils, which are labeled as virgin and extra virgin coconut oils. They are packed with the most nutrients!

Now that you know what it is, how do you know it really works? Here are just some of the benefits:

Penetrates deep into the skin to moisturize

If there’s one thing that people can agree on when using coconut oil, it is that their skin has never felt so moist! Why? Coconut oil increases the lipid levels on the surface of your skin and provides deep hydration, which means your skin stays moist for the entire day.

Repairs aged skin

Coconut oil is packed with vitamin E, and vitamin E is known for its anti-aging properties. It will penetrate the skin to both prevent and repair wrinkles and fine lines. But vitamin E isn’t the only thing at work. The proteins from the coconut oil go even deeper into your skin, working to heal damaged cells and repair tissue, helping your skin continue its natural age-prevention process.

Carrier for more nutrients

Coconut oil is considered a good carrier for other oils, like essential oils. Without a carrier oil, essentials oils could not be applied to the face, having a concentration that is so high it could harm the skin. But when combined with a carrier oil, your skin experiences the benefits of both the coconut and the essential oils, working together to keep your skin healthy. That sounds like a win!

Heals damaged skin

Do you have sun damage on your skin? Or an uneven skin tone you can’t seem to fix? Or perhaps large pores you’d link to shrink down? Coconut oil can fix that as well. The saturated fats in the oil work to even out skin tone and heal damage to the skin. They even visibly shrink pores, which helps to keep your skin looking younger than ever. One of the greatest benefits? It is cheap! One jar can last you quite a while, and will cost less than many of the more expensive, but not as effective, skin care products out there. Convinced to try coconut oil? We sure are!
