Ingredient Battle: Retinol Vs. Retinoid
What are retinoid or retinol products? If you’ve read anything about how to prevent aging, you’ve read about retinol. Retinol products are products that have the proven ability to reduce wrinkles, fight acne, increase cellular turnover, boost collagen, even out skin tone, and repair sun damage like age spots. Sound too good to be true? Today’s your lucky day! Because not only are they a real, available skin care solution, retinol really is just that good. But what retinol product should you use? Should you use retinol or retinoid? Is there a difference? If so, what is it?
RetinolRetinol is a form of naturally occurring vitamin A. It is an ingredient that is commonly found in over-the-counter skin care products, meaning they don’t require a prescription to purchase. When you apply a product with retinol to your face, the enzymes in your skin work to convert the retinol to retinoic acid, which in turn improves lines, repairs discoloration issues, and revitalizes skin. Because retinol is an ingredient found in over-the-counter products, the amount of retinol in these products is low. Which means it could take three to six months of daily usage to see a true difference in your skin. But don’t lose heart. Retinols are more affordable. And while the results may take longer to be visible, retinols do have proven results, which makes them an ideal skin care solution.
RetinoidA retinoid is a chemical compound similar to retinol, but it has a much higher concentration of vitamin A. With a higher concentration, when you apply it to your skin, the retinoid helps the skin to rapidly turn over cells. This means the retinoid kills old cells in order to boost new cell growth. It stimulates collagen productions, it thickens the deeper skin layers (which are the source of wrinkles), and it corrects any pigmentation issues by removing brown spots and slowing melanin development. Because of its higher concentration of vitamin A, it stimulates the retinoic acid much faster on your skin. It is a highly effective product that will give you results much faster than a retinol. And you will pay for that speed when you purchase it.
Regardless of which option you choose, retinol or retinoid, remember to:
- Use it at night. Retinoic acid deactivates in sunlight, so be sure to apply it before you go to sleep at the end of the day.
- Ease into using it. Your skin may have a hard time in the beginning adjusting to such active ingredients on your face.
- Apply only a small amount. You don’t need much to cover your entire face.
- Don’t limit where you apply your product. Apply it to the tops of your hands, your neck, and your chest, all areas that show signs of aging just as quickly as your face.
