Korean Skin Care Routine

Posted on June 08 2017

Have you heard of the Korean skin care routine? If you haven’t, be ready to join the party! Many claim it is THE skin care routine to follow, and we can’t blame them – it does sound pretty effective. Koreans view skin as the ultimate investment, worth both their time and money. Now we can take advantage of their routine! And while the 10 step routine may seem daunting, you’ll find it all flows together quite nicely.

1. Makeup Remover and Oil Cleanser

Yes, it is as important in this skin care routine to remove makeup as in pretty much all others! Use a nutrient-rich towelette or cleanser to remove all makeup from the face and eyes. Then, apply an oil cleanser. The oil removes impurities (like any leftover makeup or pollution particles) without drying out the skin.

2. Cleanse again

Yes, you read that right. The idea is that proper cleansing leads to a radiant, acne-free complexion, which is why you cleanse again, using a mild cream or foaming cleanser. It removes residue from the oil cleanser and removes impurities like sweat and dirt.

3. Buff and Exfoliate

Healthy skin doesn’t have dead skin cells on the surface. And skin care products have a harder time penetrating with all that dead skin on your face! You need to get it off for the best glow. But doing this step every night isn’t required. Exfoliate 1-3 times a week, depending on the sensitivity of your skin.

4. Toner

Korean toner is not like toner in the West, which is typically full of alcohol. It acts and a hydrating and clarifying cleanser, removing any residue from the prior steps while restoring your PH balance. And it preps your skin to better absorb the next step.

5. Essence

This is considered next in importance after cleansing. But what is essence? Essence is a nourishing liquid that enhances skin’s cellular renewal process, which gives increased elasticity and firmness, and a brighter complexion. Simply spritz the essence onto your skin and tap to absorb.

6. Ampoule

Ampoule is a condensed, vitamin-rich version of essences with a slicker consistency. Its high concentration helps with any existing anti-aging issues, like dulling skin, uneven skin tone, or loss of elasticity. Serums also work well in this step.

7. Mask

We’re not talking about a thick, green mask you typically envision for your face. This step uses a facial sheet mask, and is only required two to three times a week. On other days, you can supplement with a five-minute facial massage to boost circulation, or opt for targeted solutions like wrinkle-fighting eye patches or a hydrating lip mask.

8. Eye cream

Use intensive eye cream to keep fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles at bay. Apply liberally and tap around eye to keep the thin, delicate area moist, which will help to avoid more fine lines.

9. Moisturize

With all of the cleansing you’ve just done, you need to restore hydration levels. Massage your moisturizer lightly on your face and neck. Hydrated skin is less likely to wrinkle. Be sure to put it on morning and evening.

10. Sun Protection

This is another key step in the Korean skin care routine, and is needed at all times, even if stepping outside for just a couple minutes. Reapply a SPF moisturizer or sunblock throughout the day.
